The Ghanaian government, represented by Haruna Iddrisu, the Minister of Employment and Labour Relations, has reaffirmed its commitment to promoting university autonomy. During a recent event at the University of Cape Coast (UCC), Iddrisu emphasized that the independence of universities is crucial for fostering academic freedom and enhancing educational quality. He acknowledged that autonomous institutions can better respond to societal needs and contribute effectively to national development.
Iddrisu also highlighted the importance of collaboration between universities and the government in addressing challenges within the education sector. He noted that while autonomy is essential, it should be balanced with accountability to ensure that institutions remain responsive to public expectations. The minister encouraged universities to innovate and adapt their curricula to meet evolving job market demands.
Furthermore, he reiterated the government's support for policies that empower higher education institutions. By prioritizing university autonomy, Iddrisu believes Ghana can cultivate a robust educational environment that nurtures talent and drives economic growth, ultimately benefiting both students and society as a whole.
