The government has started demolishing structures at the Weija Ramsar site. This follows Caitec's failure to comply with President John Dramani Mahama’s order. The President had directed the company to stop illegal landfilling in the area.
He issued this order during a recent tour of flood-prone zones in Accra. He instructed Caitec to reverse the reclamation at its own cost. This action aims to facilitate proper dredging and prevent flooding as the rainy season approaches.
On April 10, a follow-up inspection by REGSEC showed no action from Caitec. In response, Greater Accra Regional Minister Linda Ocloo warned that the law would be enforced. She expressed concerns that defiance could jeopardize flood prevention efforts in the region.
As a result, demolition has begun to restore the site. This will allow planned dredging works to proceed effectively.
