Minister Samuel Nartey George has warned telecom operators to improve service.
He spoke at a meeting with CEOs from MTN, Telecel, and AT on May 30. Operators must enhance network performance by year-end or face penalties.
“We are not doing sentiments. We are doing engineering,” he stated. He emphasized that poor service despite existing infrastructure will lead to regulatory action.
This warning follows a report from the National Communications Authority (NCA). The report highlighted service quality issues in 48 localities across Ghana.
Even key areas like East Legon and Amasaman suffer from call drops and slow data speeds.
By June 30, telecom companies must accept the newly allocated spectrum. Mr. George insists this should lead to visible improvements by December.
If fines are imposed, 40 percent will go back to customers as compensation. This could be in the form of bonus data or call time.
“We know you can’t complete upgrades in three months,” Mr. George said. “But we must see that the process has begun.”
He added that Ghanaians should feel the impact of the spectrum rollout by year-end.
In response, MTN Ghana plans to invest $230 million this year. They have set aside GH¢25 million for hiring staff and expanding service centers.
Telecel is also expanding its shops and optimizing its network. AT’s CEO promised visible improvements by early next year and encouraged public feedback on changes.
