Gov’t to revamp roads as parliament allocates GHC 2.8 billion

Ghana's road network will undergo significant improvements. Parliament has approved GHS 2.8 billion for maintenance this year.

This funding aims to enhance transportation and boost economic activities. It will ensure smoother road conditions across the country.

In 2024, 43 percent of roads received maintenance. This included reshaping, gravelling, and pothole patching. Isaac Adjei Mensah, Chairman of the Roads and Transport Committee, spoke about these efforts at Parliament House in Accra.

He noted the heavy financial burden on the government. The total road sector debt is GHS 105 billion. Additionally, there is an outstanding commitment of GHS 109 billion owed to contractors for ongoing and stalled projects.

To maintain funding for road projects, Mr. Adjei Mensah announced plans to reintroduce road tolls. These tolls will use digital technology to improve revenue collection.

He is optimistic that the government's US$10 billion “Big Push” infrastructure program will greatly enhance roads nationwide.

In another development, Parliament passed the Appropriation Bill. This bill allows the Finance Minister to allocate public funds for key initiatives.

With this approval, funds from the Consolidated Fund can now support priority projects like road development.
