Kwame Jantuah, a private legal practitioner and energy expert, has made a bold statement. He believes government appointees should buy fuel to understand Ghanaians' struggles.
Jantuah argues that if everyone must share the energy sector debt, appointees should also pay the fuel levy. He noted that these officials often receive free fuel coupons. This means they do not feel the same pressure as ordinary citizens.
Speaking on TV3's Key Points on June 7, he questioned whether government nominees buy their own fuel. He asked how they can share in this burden without paying for fuel themselves.
Jantuah emphasized that this debt is not solely from one political party. He expressed concern about how long the levy will last and called for transparency regarding its use.
He stated that while the fuel levy is difficult, it is a necessary evil. Jantuah compared it to managing a private business with debts. If you had debts, would you not discuss selling assets with your family?
He expected more detailed explanations from the Finance Minister about the levy and its implications. Meanwhile, President John Mahama has signed the Energy Sector Levy into law.
Mahama stated that energy sector debt has hindered economic growth for years. The new levy aims to eliminate this debt and resolve ongoing crises in the energy sector.
During his signing of the Energy Sector Levy Amendment Act on June 5, 2025, he highlighted past attempts to address these issues. Mahama pledged to solve the energy crisis and improve service delivery for Ghanaians.
He assured citizens of his commitment to resolving energy sector debts while enhancing economic performance in Ghana.
