The government has donated GHS1 million to support victims of the devastating January 2 fire that destroyed over 7,000 shops at the Kantamanto Market in Accra, leaving nearly 30,000 traders in financial hardship.

The Chief of Staff, Julius Debrah, presented the donation on behalf of President John Mahama, fulfilling a promise made to the Kantamanto Traders Association.

He assured traders of plans to reconstruct the market into a modern, multi-purpose facility with enhanced safety and emergency access.

Rev. Opoku Afreh, Chairman of the Traders Association, expressed gratitude while highlighting the destruction, including losses of cash and goods worth millions of dollars.

The association has secured a $100 million loan from Access Bank for reconstruction but seeks government help in resolving land disputes.
