Gov't launches free sanitary pad initiative for schoolgirls today — MoGCSP and MoE announce

On Wednesday, April 23, 2025, a press conference was held. The Ministry of Gender, Children and Social Protection (MoGCSP) and the Ministry of Education (MoE) announced the Free Sanitary Pad Initiative. The launch will take place on Thursday, April 24, at the Salvation Army Cluster of Schools in Accra.

The press conference took place at the Ministry of Education’s conference room. It aimed to inform media organizations and the public about the initiative. This program is part of President John Dramani Mahama’s commitment to gender equality. It also focuses on menstrual health for schoolgirls across Ghana.

Dr. Agnes Naa Momo Lartey is the Minister for Gender, Children and Social Protection. She emphasized how important this initiative is for adolescent girls in schools. Poor menstrual hygiene can lead to absenteeism and low academic performance.

“This intervention removes one silent barrier to girls' education,” Dr. Lartey stated. “By providing free sanitary pads, we support girls' health and empower them.” She mentioned that around two million girls in Junior and Senior High Schools will benefit from this program.

The Minister urged the media to help raise awareness about this initiative. Educating the public on its benefits is crucial for girls’ education and national development.

The Free Sanitary Pad Initiative is part of ongoing government efforts. It aims to eliminate gender-based educational disparities and promote inclusive learning environments.
