Gov’t must cut utility tariffs for Ghanaians to receive benefits of cedi appreciation – Awal Mohammed

Awal Mohammed, a member of the NPP communication team, has made a request. He urged the John Mahama government to reduce utility tariffs. This would allow Ghanaians to benefit from the recent appreciation of the cedi.

He stated, “Government must cut electricity and water tariffs for Ghanaians.” His comments were reported by UTV.

The Public Utilities Regulatory Commission (PURC) announced new tariff increases. Electricity tariffs will rise by an average of 14.75%. Water tariffs will increase by 4.02%.

These new rates took effect on May 3, 2025. The PURC explained that adjustments are due to various factors. These include the exchange rate, inflation projections, fuel costs, and energy generation methods.

According to Bloomberg reports, the Ghana cedi has appreciated significantly since early April. It rose by about 16%. As of May 14, 2025, it trades at GH¢12.59 per dollar.

The finance minister also addressed businesses regarding pricing changes. He encouraged them to reflect the cedi's improvement in their prices. Ato Forson stated that this would help Ghanaians feel the economic recovery.

Meanwhile, Energy Minister John Jinapor asked for patience from Ghanaians. He acknowledged that difficult decisions are necessary for stable power supply. Jinapor said these decisions aim to end erratic power supply known as dumsor.

He was quoted by JOY NEWS saying, “Bear with us as we take difficult but necessary decisions.”
