Gov’t plans to export Ghanaian labour to tackle unemployment – Rashid Pelpuo reveals

The Minister for Employment and Labour Relations, Dr. Rashid Pelpuo, announced a new strategy. The government aims to export Ghanaian labor to countries needing skilled workers. This effort is part of the plan to reduce unemployment in Ghana.

During an interview on Joy FM’s Super Morning Show, Dr. Pelpuo shared that many countries are requesting Ghanaian workers. He mentioned that nations in Europe, Canada, the Gulf, and parts of Africa have shown interest.

“There have been consistent requests for Ghanaian labor worldwide,” he said. Recently, he met with the Ambassador of Barbados, who requested Ghanaian nurses.

Dr. Pelpuo emphasized that this demand reflects the quality and professionalism of Ghanaian workers. “The Ghanaian is such a quality person,” he stated.

He believes it makes sense to explore international job opportunities for unemployed Ghanaians. “If we have people with high regard who are unemployed here, we should look elsewhere,” he explained.

His ministry is collaborating with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs on this initiative. They aim to establish bilateral labor agreements with interested countries.

“I am working on getting the foreign minister to sign these agreements,” he noted. He will also sign contracts with companies wanting to hire Ghanaian workers.

The Minister assured that sending workers abroad will follow legal and ethical standards. “We’ll ensure they are treated well and paid fairly,” he promised.

He also discussed plans for better organization and monitoring of labor exports. “We are listing all countries needing Ghanaian labor,” he said.

This coordination will prevent companies from taking workers without proper oversight or knowledge of their destinations.
