Ghana is moving towards energy self-sufficiency. The country has inaugurated the Implementation Committee for its Second Gas Processing Plant (GPP II). This plant aims to boost domestic gas capacity and reduce waste from unprocessed natural gas.
The committee was launched on Monday, May 12, 2025. Energy Minister John Abdulai Jinapor and Finance Minister Cassiel Ato Forson led the event. GPP II will complement the Atuabo Gas Processing Plant, which processes 120 million standard cubic feet of gas daily. The new project aims to recover millions in losses and cut over $1 billion spent annually on liquid fuels.
“This is not just about energy; it’s about securing our economic future,” Jinapor said. He noted that Ghana lacks additional gas infrastructure since Atuabo. Building the plant could save up to $500 million a year and create 1,500 jobs.
Dr. Ato Forson emphasized the urgency of this project. He stated that using crude oil to power thermal plants costs too much for the budget. “This project is essential for our economic and social stability,” he added.
The Implementation Committee includes three working groups. There is a Steering Committee for policy oversight, a Core Technical Committee for execution, and a Communications & Social Licence Working Group for public engagement. Members come from key ministries, state energy agencies, private sector experts, and civil society organizations.
