Gov’t targets private sector to revive railways amid workers’ strike

The government is looking for private sector help to improve Ghana’s railway system. This comes during a strike by workers over poor conditions and unpaid salaries.

On May 14, 2025, Dr. Fredrick Appoh, Acting CEO of the Ghana Railway Development Authority (GRDA), spoke on The Pulse on JoyNews. He outlined the government's plan, which has two main parts: completing infrastructure and engaging the market.

Dr. Appoh said, “Our national vision is to ensure two things.” First, they will start the Tema-Mpakadan project soon. They will also seek private sector involvement in its operation.

The second part focuses on attracting investors to extend the Western Railway Line. Assessments are underway for routes from Huni Valley through Dunkwa to Boankra and from Dunkwa to Nyinahin via Awaso.

He emphasized that railway systems have long-term benefits. They can last up to 50 years and relieve pressure on roads in resource-rich areas.

“All these could be moved by rail from mining sites to ports,” he explained. The goal is to reduce road damage and improve efficiency.

Dr. Appoh confirmed work is ongoing to connect the Western Line to Nsuta, just 15 kilometers away. This will help transport manganese by rail instead of road.

“This is about operational efficiency and completing key infrastructure,” he noted.

Meanwhile, workers at Ghana Railway Company Limited remain on strike. They demand better working conditions and privatization due to years of mismanagement.

“We won’t return until our concerns are fully addressed,” they stated firmly.
