The Minister for Defence, Dr. Edward Omane Boamah, announced a new initiative. This plan aims to dredge rivers affected by illegal mining, known as *galamsey*.
The announcement came after a meeting with key stakeholders in Ghana’s environmental and water resource sectors.
In a Facebook post on April 5, Dr. Boamah explained the plan. It includes restoring rivers that have been diverted by galamsey operations.
“This intervention will dredge heavily silted rivers,” he stated. He also mentioned the possibility of restoring their natural courses.
Dr. Boamah thanked agencies like DIHOC-DENZEL and the Ministry of Lands and Natural Resources. He appreciated their “illuminating deliberations” during the meeting.
He noted that this initiative aligns with a broader vision for a 24-hour economy. It aims to provide economic benefits alongside environmental restoration.
The minister explained that the project would create jobs through land reclamation and irrigation projects. It will also revive freshwater transportation systems.
“This intervention will enhance job creation in various areas,” he added.
Dr. Boamah briefly discussed veteran welfare as well. He hinted at ongoing efforts to support veterans’ well-being as part of the Defence Ministry’s priorities.
While specific details were not provided, his comments suggest that veteran support is important to the ministry's social responsibility agenda.
