Gov’t to facilitate safe return of US deportees - Ablakwa

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs is working hard to help 160 Ghanaians. They are facing deportation from the United States.

Mr. Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, the Minister for Foreign Affairs, spoke about their efforts. He said they aim for a dignified return for these individuals.

"We will not publicize their information," he stated. "When they arrive, our team will welcome them and assist with integration."

He emphasized the importance of respecting their dignity. The ministry is collaborating quietly with partners to avoid media exposure.

Mr. Ablakwa shared this information at a media briefing on Thursday. This was in preparation for the ECOWAS 50th Anniversary launch in Accra on April 22.

Ghana will host an Extraordinary Meeting of ECOWAS Ministers on April 22 and 23 as part of the celebration.

He reaffirmed the ministry's commitment to supporting returnees and aiding their reintegration into society.

This situation arises amid increased immigration enforcement in the US. Over 3,500 undocumented immigrants have been arrested since President Trump took office.

The US has around 11 million undocumented immigrants, affecting countries like Ghana due to deportation measures.

ECOWAS is a regional economic community promoting cooperation among its 15 member states in West Africa.

It focuses on economic development, trade liberalization, infrastructure development, peace, and security.

Its goals include creating a single market and improving living standards across the region.
