The Minister of Energy, John Jinapor, announced a criminal investigation. This investigation concerns the disappearance of over 1,300 containers from the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG).
Upon taking office, he learned that about 2,500 ECG containers were stuck at the port. These containers had accumulated demurrage costs of around 1.5 billion cedis.
"I visited the port myself and saw the situation," he stated. He noted that concerns were raised during the transition process about how these containers were removed and where they went.
"We will launch a forensic criminal investigation into this matter," he said. The goal is to find out how those containers left the port and their final destination.
National security, ports, clearing companies, and ECG will be investigated. The minister promised that the inquiry would reveal the truth and hold responsible parties accountable.
"I'm confident we will get to the bottom of it," he added. He emphasized that culprits would face consequences for their actions.
John Jinapor made these comments on JoyNews' News Night on Tuesday. His remarks show the government's commitment to fighting corruption in the energy sector.
