Gov’t to sanitise Minerals Commission’s issuance of mining licenses - Lands Minister

The government plans to overhaul the mining policy. They will adopt a bottom-up approach for licensing. This aims to improve the mining sector.

Minister of Lands and Natural Resources, Emmanuel Armah-Kofi Buah, announced these reforms. He spoke at a staff meeting at the Minerals Commission in Accra on Monday.

Buah warned that anyone opposing the government's policy should leave. He stated, “Nobody will be a hurdle to our resetting agenda.”

He emphasized that they would not witch-hunt anyone. However, those hindering progress would be removed.

The Minister noted that Ghanaians gave the National Democratic Congress (NDC) a strong mandate. The goal is to reset the economy for growth and prosperity.

This was Buah's first meeting with the Commission staff. He wanted to understand their operations and share his goals.

He said, “The Minerals Commission is crucial to the country’s economy.” He urged everyone to work together for success and national improvement.

Buah expressed his commitment to working with dedicated staff. They must have integrity and follow rules and regulations.

He acknowledged some progress but stressed fundamental reforms are needed. The nation must fully benefit from mining operations.

Buah highlighted issues with prospecting licenses being misused. Some individuals were digging in cocoa farms and water bodies, harming the environment.

He stated there is something wrong with how licenses are issued. The government will reform this process by involving local communities in decision-making.

Chiefs, District Mining Committees, and local authorities will provide recommendations for license applicants. This ensures community concerns are addressed before issuing licenses.

Mining activities will be conducted responsibly and sustainably. This approach aims to protect the environment and preserve livelihoods.

The Minister urged Commission staff to align with government policies for national benefit. He reiterated efforts to revamp the Ghana Geological Survey Authority for better geological investigations.

Buah believes these reforms will include responsible mining as key performance indicators for district chief executives across Ghana.
