The Minister for Food and Agriculture, Eric Opoku, announced a $1 million initiative. This program will support over 1,500 peasant farmers in northern Ghana. It is part of the Feed Ghana Project.
Mr. Opoku explained that the initiative aims to strengthen vegetable production. It also seeks to ensure sustainable livelihoods for farmers in the agricultural sector.
In an interview on Citi FM on Monday, April 14, 2025, he emphasized the government’s commitment. The focus is on empowering grassroots farmers growing tomatoes and other vegetables.
Many of these farmers lack financial resources to expand their production. To help them, the Ministry will sign a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Apex Bank on Wednesday, April 16.
This agreement will allow structured disbursement of funds to registered farmers. It will also target those being organized into cooperatives.
“Some are already into tomato production,” he said. “Our team will identify them and supply needed logistics.”
Mr. Opoku added that the government is providing technical support as well. This includes distributing high-quality seeds and essential farming inputs for year-round cultivation.
“Our technical team has developed the best quality seeds,” he stated confidently. He believes Ghana can surpass regional competitors like Burkina Faso in vegetable farming.
The Feed Ghana Project is part of a broader agricultural development strategy. Its goals include reducing import dependence, creating jobs, and enhancing food security.
The Minister assured the public that this intervention marks just the beginning. The aim is to revitalize the agricultural sector from the grassroots level.
