Defence Minister Dr. Edward Omane Boamah announced a new government initiative. This initiative targets the owners of excavators used in illegal mining. It is part of President John Dramani Mahama’s efforts to combat galamsey.
Dr. Boamah shared updates on the anti-galamsey fight. Authorities have obtained chassis numbers from several seized excavators. This marks a significant step in tracing those responsible for environmental damage.
He stated, “As promised last month, we are glad to report that some chassis numbers of seized excavators used to perpetrate galamsey have been secured.” He described galamsey as an environmental sin against humanity and God.
The Defence Minister thanked the Ghana Police Service for their cooperation. He noted that this information will help identify key individuals who fund and benefit from galamsey.
“These chassis numbers will aid President Mahama’s determined fight against illegal mining,” Dr. Boamah said. He explained they will contact-trace the owners and ask important questions about the excavators' origins and purposes.
He emphasized that this approach is part of a broader strategy. It aims to address illegal mining at its roots, aligning with President Mahama's commitment to eradicate the galamsey threat comprehensively.
