Akonta Mining Ltd
The Ghana Coalition Against Galamsey is disappointed with the government. They criticize the failure to hold Akonta Mining Ltd accountable. This company is allegedly linked to Bernard Antwi Boasiako, known as Chairman Wontumi.
In a strong statement, the coalition condemned the government's "lackadaisical" approach. They highlighted illegal mining activities in sensitive areas like Tano Nmiri Forest Reserve.
The coalition expressed shock at the government's failure to enforce laws against Akonta Mining Ltd. They urged swift and decisive action against illegal mining. The fight against galamsey must be “fair, fearless and uncompromising,” they stressed.
They warned that not prosecuting politically connected individuals harms the government’s credibility on environmental protection. The coalition reminded President John Mahama and Speaker Alban Bagbin about past petitions for investigations into MPs involved in galamsey.
They referenced a documentary by the Ministry of Lands and Natural Resources. This documentary exposed Akonta Mining’s alleged illegal activities. Initially, they believed justice would follow but now feel those assurances are empty.
“We were promised swift action against Akonta Mining's directors,” they stated. A month has passed without arrests or prosecutions, creating a dangerous precedent of impunity.
While they praised the government for freezing Akonta Mining’s accounts, they insisted more action is needed. “We urge the government to arrest and prosecute all responsible parties immediately,” they said.
The coalition concluded by invoking Act 995. They called on the government to show that no one is above the law, regardless of political ties or social status.
