Government Grants Electricity Exemption to ‘Critical’ Institutions

Electricity Bill Exemption for Critical Ministries in Ghana

Mr. John Jinapor is the Minister for Energy. The Ministry of Energy and Green Innovation announced an electricity bill exemption. This applies to selected ministries deemed “critical.” The goal is to ensure uninterrupted public service delivery across Ghana.

The affected ministries include:
- The Office of the President
- The Ministry of Defence
- The Ministry of the Interior
- The Ministry of Health
- The Ministry of Education

The exemption specifically covers designated agencies and services under these ministries. Cabinet approved this directive, led by President John Dramani Mahama. It aims to support essential public institutions' continuous functioning.

A statement from the ministry said, “Cabinet has approved exemption for critical strategic institutions from electricity bills.” This decision ensures that vital services continue operating across the country.

The Ministry of Finance will handle these bills. They will assume responsibility for paying electricity costs for these agencies. This measure aims to reduce financial burdens on them.

Monthly electricity bills for exempted institutions will be covered by the Ministry of Finance. They will use part of their goods and services allocation from the national budget.

Revenue Collection Measures

While providing relief, the ministry also instructed ECG and NEDCo to improve revenue collection efforts. They must recover all outstanding bills from other institutions immediately.

Both ECG and NEDCo can disconnect power supply to non-exempted institutions that do not pay their bills.

The government remains committed to maintaining financial stability in the energy sector. This ensures consistent electricity provision for all Ghanaians.
