Government aims to borrow GH¢6.7bn in upcoming treasury bills auction

The government plans to borrow GH¢ 6.7 billion in June 2025. This announcement came from the Bank of Ghana (BoG). It follows the results of a tender held on May 30, 2025.

The upcoming auction is called tender 1958. It will offer 91-day, 182-day, and 364-day treasury bills to primary dealers.

The government's borrowing shows its reliance on domestic debt instruments. This is necessary to meet fiscal needs while preparing to return to capital markets.

In the previous auction, tender 1956, held on May 23, the government received bids totaling GH¢6.54 billion. However, it accepted only GH¢5.97 billion.

In the latest auction, all bids were fully accepted. The amounts allotted included GH¢2.7 billion for 91-day bills, GH¢544.06 million for 182-day bills, and GH¢286.17 million for 364-day bills.

The notice stated that the wholesale auction is open only to primary dealers. These dealers must act as market makers in this process.

Investors can still participate in the secondary market through depository participants like primary dealers.
