The government has dissolved the National Cathedral Secretariat. This marks the end of state involvement in the project. Former President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo originally championed this initiative.
The cathedral was meant to be a national Christian worship center. It aimed to symbolize Ghana’s religious identity. However, it has faced much public debate and scrutiny.
This dissolution shows a significant policy shift. It aligns with President John Dramani Mahama's consistent position. He opposes using public funds for the cathedral.
President Mahama promised no taxpayer money would go to its construction. On April 8, Minister Felix Kwakye Ofosu confirmed no further resources would be allocated.
"There are issues with procurement processes and contractor payments," a government official said. "But no one will take responsibility now that there is no National Cathedral."
"It remains a worthless structure," he added. "President Mahama will not invest GH¢400 million of taxpayers’ money into that project."
