The Minister of Education, Haruna Iddrisu, announced a new mathematics curriculum. This curriculum is for blind students in senior high schools.
Mr. Iddrisu stated that this initiative will help visually impaired students. They will be able to continue their education in mathematics and pursue STEM careers.
He made this announcement in Accra during the inauguration of the Ghana Education Service (GES) Governing Council. The council consists of 19 members.
During the event, he administered oaths of secrecy and office to the council members.
Additionally, Mr. Iddrisu mentioned developing a Ghanaian Sign Language curriculum. This will support instructions for deaf students or those with hearing issues.
He emphasized that the council's role is to manage policies and transform lives. He wants Ghana’s human resources to be competitive globally.
The minister tasked the council with creating a digital education policy by 2026. This policy will integrate ICT into education from kindergarten to senior high school.
He urged the council to ensure safety in all educational institutions immediately. He expressed concern about rising indiscipline in schools and called for stronger inspections.
Mr. Iddrisu also criticized the quality of food provided to students. He called for urgent action to improve this situation.
Furthermore, he asked the council to conduct internal audits on food distribution in schools.
He announced that a committee has been formed to review teacher licensing exams while maintaining quality standards.
The government plans to invest in infrastructure to eliminate the double-track system.
Prof Mawutor Avoke, Chairman of the GES Governing Council, thanked President Mahama for their appointment. He pledged that they would work hard to fulfill their mandate and improve education in Ghana.
Council members include Dr. Rosemond Wilson from WAEC and Prof Azeko Tahiru Salifu from the National Schools Inspectorate Authority, among others.
The minister also inaugurated a 10-member Governing Council for the University of Education, Winneba. Justice Jacob Charles Amonoo-Monney (Retired) chairs this new council, which aims for effective governance at the university.
