Government mulls excavator import restrictions in crackdown on galamsey – Lands Minister

The Minister for Lands and Natural Resources, Emmanuel Armah-Kofi Buah, announced plans to restrict excavator imports into Ghana.

This initiative aims to combat illegal small-scale mining, known as galamsey. Galamsey activities are causing significant harm to the environment and water bodies.

During a press briefing on Thursday, the Minister expressed concern about environmental degradation linked to galamsey. He highlighted the need for urgent reforms in response to this issue.

Mr. Buah noted that heavy machinery makes it easier for illegal miners to access protected areas. Excavators have become essential tools for these illicit operations.

He stated, “It is baffling that excavators rank among the top three most imported items in this country.” He added that $6.2 billion worth of excavators are often used to destroy forests and pollute water sources.

The Minister emphasized that any restrictions would not hinder legitimate construction projects. The goal is to close regulatory gaps that allow machinery diversion for illegal mining.

These proposed import controls will support broader government efforts against illegal mining. They aim to restore ecological integrity in affected regions.

Mr. Buah reaffirmed the government's commitment to decisive action. Ongoing consultations with stakeholders will shape the final enforcement framework.
