The Government has reaffirmed its commitment to improving pay and working conditions for journalists. This is part of efforts to strengthen media independence and professionalism in Ghana.
Felix Kwakye Ofosu, the Minister of State for Government Communications, made this pledge. He spoke on behalf of President John Mahama during the 2025 World Press Freedom Day celebration. The event took place in Accra and was organized by the Ghana Journalists Association (GJA).
The theme was “Celebrating the Champions of Press Freedom and Ghana’s Media Growth.” It focused on the role of artificial intelligence in shaping journalism's future.
Mr. Kwakye Ofosu emphasized that fair labor practices are crucial for a vibrant media landscape. He stated that financial security for journalists is essential for true media independence.
He announced that the government would implement policy reforms to promote sustainability and safety in the media sector. These reforms aim to address challenges faced by journalists in their work.
Regarding journalist safety, Mr. Kwakye Ofosu recalled a time when Ghana's press freedom ranking fell due to attacks and intimidation. He assured journalists that the government is committed to protecting them and upholding their rights.
He mentioned the unresolved murder of investigative journalist Ahmed Suale. He reiterated the government's determination to bring those responsible to justice.
“We will not allow impunity against journalists to define press freedom in Ghana,” he said.
Mr. Ofosu highlighted government investments aimed at building a resilient media ecosystem. This includes fair regulatory enforcement, support for ethical journalism, and professional development opportunities.
He noted that the Right to Information Act has improved access to information, enhancing democratic participation and civic engagement.
During the event, GJA honored distinguished journalists for their contributions to journalism in Ghana. Awardees included past GJA Presidents Ambassador Kabral Blay-Amihere, Mrs Gifty Afenyi-Dadzie, and Ms Ajoa Yeboah-Afari.
Other honorees included Dr Charles Wereko-Brobby, Mr Kwesi Pratt Jnr., Mr Ben Ephson, and Madam Elizabeth Ohene.
Mr. Kwakye Ofosu called for collaboration among stakeholders like media owners, security agencies, and political actors. Together they can uphold and safeguard press freedom in Ghana.
