Government prioritising social protection in 2025 Budget – Finance Minister

Finance Minister Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson has reaffirmed the government's commitment to vulnerable groups. This support will come through enhanced social protection measures in the 2025 Budget.

He spoke during a meeting with British High Commissioner Harriet Thompson on Thursday morning. He highlighted key interventions aimed at helping low-income households facing economic challenges.

A major focus is the School Feeding Programme. The allocation will increase from ¢1 to ¢2, with plans for future increases.

Payments under the Livelihood Empowerment Against Poverty (LEAP) programme will also rise. This aims to provide greater relief to beneficiaries.

To ensure sustainable funding for social interventions, the government has uncapped key statutory levies. These include the NHIS Levy and GETFund, freeing up more resources for their intended purposes.

Harriet Thompson praised the pro-poor focus of the 2025 Budget. She described it as forward-looking and a significant milestone.

She also expressed the UK’s willingness to support Ghana in climate finance. There is a need for sustainable funding for long-term development.

The meeting reinforced the government’s commitment to protecting vulnerable groups. Social protection programs will remain a top priority despite economic constraints.
