The government has reclaimed the Asenayo Forest Reserve from illegal miners. This marks a significant step in the fight against illegal mining. It also protects Ghana’s forest reserves and water bodies.
This success came from a coordinated operation. The Forestry Commission led this effort with security agencies. They worked under the Ministry of Lands and Natural Resources.
The Asenayo Forest Reserve is now secure and protected by the state. It is the eighth of nine high-priority “red-zoned” reserves recovered from armed miners. This shows the government's strong stance against galamsey.
Dr. Hugh Brown, CEO of the Forestry Commission, announced this achievement at an inter-agency retreat. He highlighted how effective collaboration can lead to success.
Previously, seven other reserves were reclaimed under Minister Emmanuel Armah-Kofi Buah's leadership. These recoveries involved joint operations with military, police, and Forestry Commission.
The government uses intelligence-led enforcement and community engagement for recovery efforts. Their approach focuses on ecological restoration as well.
Only one forest reserve remains under illegal occupation now. The Ministry is committed to reclaiming it fully.
They stated, "No forest land will be ceded to criminals." The government is mobilizing resources to protect these vital ecosystems permanently.
