The government plans to deploy 5,000 graduates from agricultural and veterinary schools. This initiative aims to support farmers in improving productivity. It also encourages the adoption of modern farming techniques.
Minister for Food and Agriculture, Eric Opoku, announced this plan. He stated it is part of the Feed Ghana program. This program seeks to modernize agriculture and connect research with practical farming.
Opoku spoke to Citi Business News about the initiative. He mentioned that many graduates have been unemployed since 2015. The goal is for these graduates to join the Feed Ghana initiative.
These graduates will be assigned to farms nationwide. They will help farmers implement improved agricultural practices. Opoku emphasized the importance of closing the gap between research and actual farming.
Additionally, Ghana has received 300 tonnes of rice seeds from Korea. These seeds will be distributed to boost local rice production.
Opoku explained that high-quality rice and maize seeds are being provided. These seeds are approved as suitable for Ghana's soil conditions. The donation comes from KOPIA, a Korean agricultural research agency in Ghana.
Distribution has begun in southern regions where farming is active now. Preparations are underway to supply northern regions when their season starts in May.
