Ghana to Stop Using Wooden Furniture in Schools and Ban Styrofoam Packs
The Mahama administration plans to stop using wood for school furniture. This is part of a broader effort to protect Ghana’s environment.
Additionally, the government will ban the importation and production of Styrofoam food packs. President John Mahama announced these plans during World Environment Day celebrations in Kwabenya.
He explained that these actions aim to preserve trees and promote sustainable materials. Recycled plastic and metal will be encouraged instead.
Mahama called Styrofoam one of the most harmful pollutants. He emphasized the urgent need for alternative materials.
“We can’t plant trees while cutting them down,” he said. To reduce tree cutting, he intends to issue a directive against wooden school furniture.
He also highlighted that Styrofoam is a major pollutant from food packaging. “After eating, people just dump it,” he noted.
Mahama suggested using paper packaging or aluminum foil instead. He warned manufacturers and importers about the upcoming ban on Styrofoam in Ghana.
