FA Cup chairman Wilson Arthur has criticized the government's commitment to sports. He believes it undervalues the importance of sports development.
On March 27, Ghana's Parliament approved GHS 65,899,456 for the Ministry of Sports and Recreation. This funding is for the year ending December 31, 2025.
Arthur spoke to Luv Sports about the need for a dedicated sports fund in Ghana. He said, “It’s either the government has a plan B to raise funding, or they don’t value sports."
He emphasized that Ghana needs a sports fund to develop athletics. "I am not saying the government should put money in it," he added. "But they can facilitate it."
Arthur suggested that the government could generate revenue for this fund. This could be done by investing in local players and supporting national teams.
“If I were president,” he said, “I would hold one big ball every year.” He envisions bringing all sports icons together for a dinner with supporters.
“There will be huge donations,” he explained. “That money can seed our sports fund.”
With this funding, they could pay Premier League and division one league players. It could also support women professional players and national team athletes.
Arthur noted that when players are transferred abroad, the government could take a cut. That revenue would then go into the sports fund.
