The government will support the Research Unit of the Ghana Geological Survey Authority (GGSA). This support aims to identify mineralised areas for responsible mining.
Emmanuel Armah-Kofi Buah, the Minister of Lands and Natural Resources, made this announcement. He visited the GGSA head office in Accra on Thursday. His goal was to understand its operations and challenges.
The minister emphasized that GGSA's work is vital in combating illegal small-scale mining. He assured that his ministry would help the Authority operate efficiently and profitably.
“I will ensure the Minerals Investment and Income Fund (MIIF) increases funding for research,” he stated. This increase will help GGSA operate more effectively.
Mr. Buah highlighted the need for public-private partnerships. These partnerships can boost internally generated funds instead of relying solely on government support.
He noted that many workers seem unhappy with their pay. There is a high employee attrition rate, which needs addressing. “We must work together to transform the Survey Authority,” he said.
The minister encouraged GGSA staff to align with government policies. This alignment will help improve the institution’s performance.
“I’m ready to collaborate with dedicated workers who have integrity,” Mr. Buah added. He pledged to assist in building staff capacity and repairing broken equipment.
During an open forum, staff requested a bus for transportation and modern soil testing equipment. Some workers raised concerns about dangers faced by field officers while exploring mineralised areas.
A geoscientist shared an incident where locals nearly attacked them during soil sampling. The officer suggested better communication with local assemblies before field assignments to ensure safety.
