Govt committed to rescuing troubled AT, protecting 500 jobs – Sam George

The Minister for Communication, Digital Technology, and Innovation, Sam Nartey George, has made a commitment. The government aims to revive mobile operator AT, formerly Airtel-Tigo. The company is facing significant challenges.

AT currently has large debts and outdated infrastructure. During a press briefing on April 9, Sam George criticized the previous $1 acquisition deal. He called it “disingenuous and unpatriotic.”

George noted that former operators Bharti Airtel and Millicom did not invest in AT. This lack of investment over five years left the company in poor condition. He stated that the acquisition did not benefit Ghana and showed a failure in leadership.

After visiting the company, he assured journalists of government support. He said they will take necessary steps to restore AT’s operations. Protecting the livelihoods of its workers is also a priority.

“AT is a troubled company,” he acknowledged. However, he believes it has strong human capital in the telecom sector. They have managed through difficult times.

The Minister emphasized their commitment to fixing these issues permanently. He mentioned that tough conversations and decisions are needed ahead. The government plans policy and operational reforms for long-term stability at AT.

Sam George described the Akufo-Addo government's acquisition of Airtel-Tigo as ill-informed and reckless.
