The government has cancelled diplomatic and service passports for 701 holders. This cancellation is effective immediately. The passports are no longer valid for international travel.
The decision came after many holders failed to return their passports. The government had set a deadline for this return.
A statement from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs was issued yesterday. It was also shared with The Ghanaian Times.
The statement listed various categories of passport holders affected by this cancellation. These include former Ministers and their spouses, former Members of Parliament, and former Members of the Council of State.
Other affected individuals include former Justices, Regional Ministers, and District Chief Executives. Additionally, it includes former Officers of State Institutions and board members.
Officials from the National Cathedral Project, non-career ambassadors, and dependents are also included. Religious leaders, traditional leaders, businessmen, entrepreneurs, and other former government functionaries are affected too.
