Finance Minister Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson recently met with Energy Minister Hon. John Abdulai Jinapor. They discussed important issues with key stakeholders in Ghana’s power sector.
The meeting included leaders from the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG), Public Utilities Regulatory Commission (PURC), and Volta River Authority (VRA). Other participants were from the Energy Commission, GRIDCo, and more.
They focused on finding long-term solutions to ongoing challenges. These challenges include legacy debts, tariff issues, operational inefficiencies, and costly power purchase agreements.
Dr. Forson acknowledged the financial strain in the sector. However, he emphasized that they aimed to identify actionable steps for stability and sustainability.
“Our conversation centred on urgent solutions for Ghana’s power sector,” he stated. The meeting ended with a commitment from all parties to support reforms under the Energy Sector Recovery Programme (ESRP).
This includes prioritizing financial strategies and policy changes. The goal is to improve operational efficiency and provide reliable electricity at affordable rates.
Dr. Forson noted that stabilizing the power sector will also protect the broader economy from negative effects caused by electricity delivery issues.
