Govt in talks with strategic investor to revamp and takeover AT

The government is negotiating with a strategic investor for AirtelTigo. The company is now rebranded as AT. This effort aims to improve the state-owned telecom operator and boost competition.

Samuel Nartey George, the Minister for Communications, shared this news on May 30, 2025. He spoke during a meeting with telecom industry CEOs. A 60-day timeline has been set to complete the deal.

The goal is to roll out better services by the end of Q3. “It’s good to hear about CAPEX requirements coming in,” said Sam George. He emphasized that he represents the Ghanaian people in these negotiations.

This initiative seeks to inject capital and expertise into AT. The company has struggled since the government took over in 2021.

Mr. George also announced that Cabinet approved new spectrum resources for major players. Telecel and MTN will receive these resources to enhance infrastructure and service delivery.

“Cabinet is approving spectrum for Telecel and MTN,” he stated. Regulators have also requested licenses for connecting entities like AT and Telecel. This will help them access more resources quickly.

These developments show the government's commitment to innovation and improved services in telecommunications.
