Govt launches Free Sanitary Pad initiative to support schoolgirls

The government has launched the Free Sanitary Pad Initiative. This program aims to distribute sanitary pads to schoolgirls nationwide. It supports their health and education.

The initiative was unveiled on Thursday, April 24, in Accra. Key stakeholders attended, including ministers and education experts. Representatives from various schools were also present.

This intervention aligns with President John Dramani Mahama’s vision for gender equality. He wants every child to access quality education, regardless of gender or background. President Mahama highlighted the need to address barriers girls face during menstruation.

During his first State of the Nation Address, he stressed removing these obstacles. The program aims to ease financial burdens on families. It will improve school attendance among girls and enhance their health.

By providing essential menstrual hygiene products, the initiative fosters a supportive learning environment. Stakeholders believe it will increase attendance and retention of girls in schools. This effort helps close the gender gap in education and empowers young women across the country.

“I appointed you to solve problems; deliver or step aside,” Mahama told ministers.
