Govt races against time as Mahama’s 120-day social contract nears deadline

The government is working hard to meet its 120-day social contract with Ghanaians. Tomorrow, May 7, 2025, marks the deadline since President John Dramani Mahama took office. This deadline is for fulfilling key promises from the 2024 NDC Manifesto.

So far, nineteen promises have been fulfilled. Two are in progress, but seven remain unfulfilled. These include reviewing vehicle taxes and starting a 24-hour economy policy. Other unfulfilled promises involve banning illegal mining and reviewing the Customs Amendment Act of 2020.

Additionally, there are plans to introduce a bill for government scholarships. Investigations into state security agencies and by-election killings are also pending.

President Mahama will address the nation on Wednesday, May 7. He will update Ghanaians on his administration's progress over the past four months. Citizens are encouraged to tune in and assess how well he has kept his promises.

Yesterday, the government launched a Code of Conduct for appointees. A digital portal for reporting breaches of this code will also be launched soon. The President emphasized that failure to declare assets by May 7 will lead to automatic dismissal.

Fulfilled Promises:
- Nomination of a full cabinet list
- Formation of a leaner government
- Launching a national economic dialogue
- Organizing a national education dialogue
- Initiatives like Tree for Life and Blue Water

Other fulfilled initiatives include:
- Abolishing certain taxes (Covid levy)
- One Million Coders Programme
- Free tertiary education for disabled students
- Free sanitary pads for girls

Ongoing Promises:
Investigations into Ahmed Suale’s death and other matters are ongoing.

Unfulfilled Promises:
Seven key areas still need attention:
1. Review of vehicle taxes
2. Start of the 24-hour economy policy
3. Review of Customs Amendment Act, 2020
4. New bill for streamlined government scholarships
5. Purging vigilante elements from security agencies
6. Reopening investigations into election-related violence

The government aims to fulfill these commitments soon as part of their social contract with Ghanaians.
