The Minister for Local Government, Chieftaincy, and Religious Affairs, Ahmed Ibrahim, announced a change. The National Sanitation Day (NSD) is now set for Saturday, May 3, 2025.
Ibrahim explained that this clean-up will be treated as an emergency operation. Environmental service providers and the government will support it fully. "On May 3, we will have an emergency evacuation," he said.
All environmental service providers will participate in this effort. They will bring their logistics while the government partners with them. "We will clean and desilt gutters," he added.
Plastic waste will go to recycling plants. Organic waste will be sent to appropriate locations. Ibrahim noted that many people want to join this initiative.
He shared these details during a meeting with Christian leaders on April 15, 2025. This meeting included representatives from major religious institutions like the Christian Council of Ghana and the Presbyterian Church of Ghana.
The discussions aimed to build national support for NSD and encourage community participation. Ibrahim mentioned that the government is also working on long-term waste management strategies.
These strategies include promoting waste segregation and responsible disposal among citizens. This approach aims to prevent diseases like cholera in affected areas.
As part of sanitation efforts, some recycling equipment has been acquired. This equipment will help manage plastic waste and improve hygiene nationwide.
"While banning plastics isn't feasible now, we focus on promoting recycling," he stated. Recycling plants are already established in the country.
Ibrahim urged Christian leaders to promote cleanliness during Easter celebrations. He encouraged them to use their platforms for this important message.
