The Minister for Education, Haruna Iddrisu, has announced a new fund. This fund aims to boost investments in Technical and Vocational Education Training (TVET) in Ghana.
TVET is crucial for Ghana's education and skills development strategy. It helps learners gain practical skills and knowledge for jobs and entrepreneurship. The program targets both formal and informal sectors. It is vital for reducing youth unemployment and enhancing productivity.
Despite reforms, TVET faces many challenges. Many still view it as a last resort for weaker students. Funding for equipment and infrastructure remains inadequate and inconsistent. There is also limited collaboration between training providers and industry.
Additionally, facilities are outdated, lacking modern tools and resources. There is a shortage of qualified instructors as well. Opportunities for their professional development are also limited.
On June 3, 2025, the education minister addressed Parliament about this issue. He plans to present the proposal to cabinet soon. “I am working with cabinet to establish a Technical and Vocational Education Fund,” he said. This fund will support investment in TVET infrastructure.
This year, the GETFund formula includes dedicated financing for TVET initiatives.
