Govt to give $1m to Peasant Farmers for vegetable production – Eric Opoku

The Minister for Food and Agriculture, Eric Opoku, announced a $1 million fund. This money will support over 1,500 peasant farmers in Northern Ghana. It is part of the Feed Ghana Project to boost vegetable production.

On April 14, 2025, during the Citi Breakfast Show, he spoke about this initiative. The government aims to empower grassroots farmers engaged in tomato and vegetable cultivation. Many of these farmers struggle financially to expand their operations.

To address this issue, the government will provide direct financial support. The funding will be formalized on April 16, 2025. On that day, the Minister will sign a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Apex Bank for disbursement.

"We are focusing on registered peasant farmers," he said. "Some are already involved in tomato production." The goal is to identify these farmers and provide necessary logistics.

Mr. Opoku emphasized that many lack financial resources for their work. He plans to engage with the media on April 16 regarding the MoU signing. This funding marks just the beginning of support for these farmers.

He also mentioned technical assistance for improved farming practices. The government is supplying better seeds and inputs for higher productivity year-round. "Our technical team has developed high-quality supplies," he stated confidently.

He believes they can surpass agricultural achievements in Burkina Faso. Agriculture is no longer an afterthought, as highlighted by Mahama during the 'Feed Ghana' launch.
