Govt to inaugurate task force to fast-track National Airline establishment

Ghana plans to establish a national airline. A high-level task force will oversee this process. This move shows a renewed commitment to the country's aviation goals.

Ghana has not had a national airline for nearly two decades. Operations were suspended due to a U.S. ban related to debts. The original flag carrier, Ghana Airways, operated from 1958 until 2004. It was followed by Ghana International Airlines, which ran from 2005 to 2010.

In September 2022, momentum increased when Ashanti Airlines became the government’s partner. This rekindled hopes for rebranding as ‘Ghana Airlines.’ It also attracted interest from various stakeholders.

The new task force will be inaugurated under President John Dramani Mahama's directive. It will be led by the Ministry of Transport. The goal is to generate fresh investor interest and foster partnerships in aviation.

Transport Minister Joseph Bukari Nikpe stated that the government seeks collaborative partnerships. He acknowledged that economic constraints make independent pursuit difficult for the airline project.
