The government plans to lease the Komenda Sugar Development Company Limited to West Africa Agro Limited, an Indian-based firm, for a renewable 15 to 20-year term.
Minister of Trade and Industry K.T. Hammond aims to revive the long-dormant factory, established in 1964, to meet domestic demand.
Despite a 2016 revamp effort funded by a $35 million loan and an additional $24 million investment, the factory remained inactive.
Hammond criticized the previous administration’s handling of the project and affirmed the government's commitment to revitalizing the factory through this lease arrangement.
