The government plans to review the Ghana Automotive Development Policy. This review will focus on adding an electric vehicle (EV) policy framework.
Elizabeth Ofosu-Agyare, the Minister for Trade, Industry, and Agribusiness, announced this plan. She spoke during the opening of a new Foton Truck showroom in Tema. The goal is to make Ghana a competitive investment destination in the EV sector.
Ofosu-Agyare stated that the automotive industry is ready for investment. She emphasized that there is also readiness for E-Vehicle investments. The government aims to create an environment where automotive businesses can thrive.
The current automotive policy was established five years ago. At that time, E-Vehicles were not very popular. Now, the law will be amended to include E-Vehicles and E-Bicycles or E-Tricycles.
This amendment will ensure subsidies and tax waivers for E-Tricycles and E-Motors are available. Ofosu-Agyare mentioned upcoming stakeholder consultations related to a 24-hour economy.
She noted that various industries are prepared to operate around the clock. The government is eager to establish component manufacturing laws as well. They aim to amend existing laws properly to incorporate E-Vehicles and E-Motors.
Additionally, Ofosu-Agyare toured several automotive assembly facilities in Tema. These included Japan Motors Assembly Plant and Volkswagen Ghana.
