Govt undermining National Security by deploying it for civil cases – Assafuah

Vincent Ekow Assafuah, the MP for Old Tafo, has raised concerns. He is worried about how National Security handled the arrest of Alfred Ababio Kumi. Kumi is a youth activist of the New Patriotic Party (NPP).

Assafuah believes this incident shows a troubling trend. He thinks regular law enforcement could have managed it better. Kumi was reportedly picked up from his home on May 23, 2025.

He was detained by the National Intelligence Bureau (NIB) but released later that day. His release followed intervention from Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin. Kumi was charged with false publication.

On Channel One TV's The Big Issue, Assafuah expressed his concerns further. He criticized the overuse of National Security in such situations. “We should be careful about using National Security,” he said.

Assafuah emphasized that this approach could diminish its importance over time. He suggested that the Ghana Police Service should have handled the case instead.

He stated, “The Ghana Police Service could have led this invitation.” Assafuah also noted that if Kumi broke any laws, police were equipped to act. “The Ghana Police can deal with matters like this,” he added.

Kumi was released after Afenyo-Markin's intervention.
