Govt working to reintegrate Ghanaians facing US deportation – Ablakwa

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs is working to help Ghanaians deported from the U.S. They aim to ensure safe return, reintegration, and reunification for these individuals.

Since President Trump took office on January 20, immigration enforcement has intensified. The U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) has arrested over 3,500 undocumented immigrants. Deportation flights have resumed, using U.S. military aircraft for transport.

According to the Pew Research Center, about 11 million undocumented immigrants live in the U.S., which has a population of around 341 million. Ghana is affected by this situation, with 160 nationals facing imminent deportation.

At a press briefing in Accra, Minister Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa confirmed ongoing efforts for safe returns. He mentioned there are no significant updates since the last report from Ghana’s embassy in Washington.

Ablakwa stated that about 160 Ghanaians are on the deportation list. He emphasized humanitarian reasons for not publicizing their information. Upon arrival, a team will welcome them and assist with integration and family connections.

The ministry is also collaborating with partners discreetly to respect the dignity of returnees. They aim to avoid exposing them to media coverage during this sensitive time.
