The retrial of Gregory Afoko, accused of murdering Adams Mahama, has been postponed to April 7. This decision was made by the High Court in Accra after the case was brought before Justice George Buadi. During the proceedings, Afoko’s legal representation highlighted an ongoing appeal regarding a previous ruling that dismissed their request for a fresh trial based on alleged procedural irregularities during the initial hearings.
Afoko has consistently denied any involvement in Mahama's death, which occurred in May 2015 when Mahama was allegedly attacked with acid in a politically charged incident. The earlier trial concluded with Afoko being sentenced to death; however, this verdict has been under scrutiny due to claims of inadequate legal representation and mismanaged evidence.
As the new date approaches, both the prosecution and defense remain focused on ensuring a fair hearing amidst lingering public interest and political implications surrounding the case. The adjournment allows both sides additional time to prepare their arguments as they navigate this complex legal landscape.
