A civil society group, the Alliance for Justice and Equality (AFJE), has petitioned President John Dramani Mahama. They want him to revoke what they call politically-motivated “last-minute” appointments at the Ghana Civil Aviation Authority (GCAA).
The petition is dated June 2, 2025. It was signed by Executive Director Haruna Mohammed and Secretary Dr. Eric Derrick Antwi. The Alliance demands the immediate revocation of three appointments: Mr. Benjamin Eshun (Director of General Services), Mr. Thomas A. Wilson (Director of Corporate Planning), and Mr. Akuamoah Boateng (Director of Air Traffic Services).
These appointments were reportedly made on December 10, 2024. The appointees are said to be affiliates of the New Patriotic Party (NPP). They had previously failed interviews conducted by the Public Services Commission between December 11 and 22, 2023.
The Alliance questioned why these appointments have not been reversed yet. They noted a December 2024 directive from the Chief of Staff to review end-of-tenure recruitments and appointments.
“If the newly appointed Acting Director-General of the GCAA has not reported this situation to the Chief of Staff, then it is most unfortunate,” stated the petition.
The group made four key demands:
1. Investigate the recruitment process and rationale behind these appointments.
2. Direct the Acting Director-General to provide full disclosure on this matter.
3. Conduct a forensic audit of recent major projects at GCAA.
4. Inquire into possible use of fake or unaccredited professional certificates by officials.
AFJE emphasized its commitment to justice, equality, and accountability in public service. They believe only merit-based appointments will support the government’s “RESET Agenda.”
The petition was also sent to the Vice President, Chief of Staff, and Minister for Transport.
