Human Rights Reporters Ghana (HRRG) has condemned an attack on press freedom. This incident involved JoyNews journalist Latif Iddrisu at the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO) in Accra.
HRRG expressed “grave disturbance and outrage” over the attack. They called it a direct assault on human rights and media freedom. The safety of journalists in Ghana is also at risk.
“This assault on a journalist is a direct attack on press freedom,” the group stated. They demanded swift action from Ghanaian authorities. HRRG called for a prompt and transparent investigation into the incident.
Justice must be served, and those responsible should be held accountable, they added. HRRG urged the Inspector General of Police, the President, and other officials to investigate thoroughly. They also want measures to prevent future violence against journalists.
“The safety of journalists is essential for democracy,” HRRG emphasized. It protects freedom of expression under Article 162 of Ghana’s Constitution. No journalist should face threats or harm while doing their job.
The organization extended sympathy to Latif Iddrisu, his family, and the media community. They appealed to civil society and media organizations to unite against violence targeting journalists.
“A free and safe press is vital for democracy,” HRRG stated. Any attempt to harm journalists undermines Ghana’s progress.
HRRG will monitor developments in this case closely. They are committed to advocating for accountability and protecting journalists' rights in Ghana.
