President John Dramani Mahama announced that Hajj fares may drop to GHC50,000 next year. This is possible if the Ghanaian Cedi continues to appreciate against the US dollar. He spoke during his Thank You Tour in Kintampo on May 29, 2025.
The President noted recent exchange rate gains affect pilgrimage costs. "When we started paying for Hajj, the Cedi was at GHC15.5 to the dollar," he explained. The fare for the $4,000 cost then came to GHC62,000.
Currently, with the Cedi at GHC10.5, fares could fall below GHC50,000 next year. Mahama praised his administration's efforts to make Hajj more affordable. Fares have already decreased from GHC75,000 to GHC60,000 since his government took over.
His comments come amid discussions about the strengthening Cedi and its effects on living costs. He emphasized that a stronger local currency should provide relief across various sectors.
Additionally, Friday, June 6, 2025 will be a public holiday for Eid-ul-Adha. A statement from Interior Minister Muntaka Mubarak urged everyone to observe this day nationwide.
Eid-ul-Adha is a significant event in Islam known as the Festival of Sacrifice. It honors Prophet Ibrahim's faith and willingness to sacrifice his son Ishmael for God’s command. The festival coincides with the end of Hajj and falls on the 10th day of Dhul Hijjah.
Often called “Greater Eid,” it includes special prayers and animal sacrifices. Muslims celebrate with family and friends while helping those in need.
Mahama also commended GPRTU for reducing fares as the economy stabilizes.
