President John Dramani Mahama has promised Ghana’s Muslim community lower Hajj fares next year. He cited the strengthening cedi and ongoing negotiations with Saudi authorities.
During Eid ul Adha celebrations in Accra on June 6, Mahama acknowledged this year's high costs. Many families faced a heavy financial burden despite efforts to reduce prices. He expressed hope that 2026 would bring relief to pilgrims.
"This year, despite our efforts, costs remained high," he said. "But we are working closely with relevant agencies and our Saudi counterparts." He added that if the cedi remains strong, there will be a significant drop in fares.
Mahama noted that current exchange rates would make fares around GHS45,000. This is a marked decrease from current prices.
In addition to the Hajj announcement, Mahama revealed plans for a new law. His team has prepared a bill to make Eid ul Fitr a public holiday. This bill will soon be submitted to Parliament.
"It means it will be law and not just an executive declaration," he explained.
