Hand sanitizers not 100% effective, handwashing with soap still the best option – Dr Evavera

Dr. Evavera Tettyfio, a Medical Officer at SIC Bob Freeman Clinic, has issued a warning. She cautioned against relying only on hand sanitizers to prevent infections like cholera.

In an interview on Joy Prime's Prime Show, Dr. Tettyfio explained that hand sanitizers can help reduce germs. However, they are not a complete defense against diseases.

Cholera is a highly contagious waterborne infection. It spreads quickly if proper hygiene is not practiced.

Dr. Tettyfio emphasized that while sanitizers kill many germs, they do not eliminate all harmful bacteria. This includes bacteria that cause cholera.

"Hand sanitizers are useful but do not guarantee complete protection," she said. "If your hands are dirty or contaminated with water or food, sanitizers won’t fully protect you." She stressed the importance of washing hands thoroughly with soap and water.

She also addressed the misconception about cholera affecting only coastal residents. "Cholera can affect anyone, anywhere," she clarified. "It’s not limited to coastal areas." Everyone should be aware of the risks and take precautions.

Dr. Tettyfio discussed the limitations of the cholera vaccine as well. While it offers some protection, it is not 100% effective. "Even with the vaccine, good hygiene practices are key," she explained.

She warned against relying solely on hand sanitizers or alcohol-based rubs. "They can help when soap and water aren’t available," she noted. However, they should not replace proper handwashing.

"Washing your hands thoroughly with soap and clean water is still the best way to protect yourself from cholera and other infections," she concluded.
